What we did

Plan

ArtRise Projects worked with People’s Kitchen Collective (PKC) and filmmaker Fox Nakai, to develop an interpretive and engagement strategy and implementation plan for EARTH SEED. This multidisciplinary project centered on a pilgrimage that followed a path through the environs of Octavia Butler’s Parable series from present-day Los Angeles to the Mendocino Woodlands from March through June 2023. Rooted in the legacy of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense and the diaspora of the global south, through EARTH SEED, PKC enacted radical hospitality as a survival practice by visiting and deepening relationships with BIPOC activists, artists, educators, farmers, youth, and elders and significant place across the terrain.

People’s Kitchen Collective works at the intersection of art and activism as a food-centered political education project. Based in Oakland, California, PKC’s creative practices reflect the diverse histories and backgrounds of their organization and produces immersive experiences that underscore radical hospitality as a strategy to address the urgent social issues of our time and developing new models for survival and our collective future.
